How is Couples Help any different from seeing a marriage counsellor or clinical psychologist?

That’s a really good question, and I’m glad you asked.

I am immensely grateful for all medical and other professionals in our country who are committed to the restoration of relationships. I also believe that every couple is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all blanket solution.

Most traditional counseling approaches involve an hour a week or something along those lines. But these short disconnected patches of time often lack a sense of continuity, and many couples are left feeling helpless and powerless when the rubber hits the road in the grind of every day life. In many cases, these sessions ultimately become a guide to an amicable divorce, or at best, a relatively easier living arrangement.

My own personal story led me to realise that Intensive Therapy, on the other hand, has had an overwhelming track record of over 95% of relationships

Restored to wholeness. It involves a solid chunk of time, two or three days spent with the couple in their own home.

It takes time, courage and commitment, both from the couple and the therapist. And sadly, very few places in our country offer Intensive Therapy. I’ve been there, and I understand the pain and hurt of disconnection. But I also understand what it means to have someone who’ll walk the road with you. And having come out the other side, still happily married to my varsity sweetheart, I live what I teach every day.

After working for 17 years in the insurance industry, I completed my BA Hons. in Psychology, followed by a year's internship with Family Life Centre. In 2011, I completed the HPCSA Board Exam and qualified as a Registered Counsellor.

I use a narrative approach to therapy and use a variety of techniques to journey with you as you ​ navigate the speed bumps of your life. My approach is gentle and compassionate and I aim for solution focused outcomes.

I chose the name Meraki, as it really speaks to me about the supportive, open counselling environment in which healing takes place. It’s a Greek word meaning “to do something with soul, creativity, or love; to put something of yourself in your work.”

This sets the tone for a safe, understanding, non-judgmental space where together we can explore solutions and find new empowering ways of dealing with problems, traumas and creating a meaningful future which inspires you.

No matter how difficult life may feel at this moment, together we can discover the solutions and changes that you want in your life. I sincerely believe that using therapy to provide support and assistance in a compassionate, non-critical, understanding environment is my life’s calling.

I have always experienced my greatest sense of accomplishment in helping people deal with challenges. After completing my BLC LLB, this passion led to my completing a Honours Degree in Psychology at the University of Pretoria in 2004. I trained as a counsellor for an NGO, focusing on marriage and relationship counselling, individual counselling and trauma related counselling for the last 10 years, furthering my passion and knowledge with key courses in trauma counselling and couples therapy. I have been lecturing various modules of Psychology since 2011 - Marriage counselling, Sexual trauma, Personology and Social Psychology.

I regularly host workshops or talks on a variety of subjects from dealing with your teenager, to coping with stress, resolving relationship issues and more. I am a wife and mother, which gives me deeper insight into my clients’ experiences and challenges.
