The Art Appreciation Course is provided by The Art Institute, presented and curated by art and antiques consultant Hilary Kay. Hilary has brought together 12 passionate art specialists to create an introductory course, designed to provide you with a broad understanding of western art, its history and the world that surrounds it.

The Art Appreciation course is delivered online and consists of 12 modules and 12 corresponding assignments. You can study in your own time and at your own pace to get the most out of every module. Normally, you would expect to be dedicating an average of about 4-6 hours per week for 24 weeks. However, many students take up to one year to complete their studies because of family or work commitments. Extensions are available for purchase if required.

Students have the opportunity to delve deeper into specific areas of interest in art by purchasing Advanced Modules. These are similar to short courses and are specially formulated materials to challenge motivated students to achieve more.

Hilary Kay is an art and antiques consultant, broadcaster, international lecturer and writer. She is one of the most familiar faces on BBC TV's Antiques Roadshow having joined this successful and long running programme as an expert in 1979. Hilary has featured in countless other television and radio programmes and, in 2010, she won BBC TV's Celebrity Mastermind. Her career in art and antiques began in 1977 when she joined Sotheby's, rising rapidly to head of department; the following year she became Sotheby's youngest ever auctioneer when she took her first sale at the age of 21.

Each module has been written by a different author recognised in his or her area of expertise. All authors, including the tutors have been drawn from major art institutions, academia and from the international art world. They are all passionate about their subject; they have wide experience in teaching their chosen field to an eclectic audience and are keen to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with you.

Libby has been a lecturer in painting, life drawing, art criticism and professional development for various UK universities and has also worked as a life model. Her interest in the creative and professional development of artists, designers and writers has informed both her coaching, which she has delivered for various national arts and literary organizations as well as individual creatives, and also her current work with student employability and entrepreneurship.

Stephen Farthing studied at St Martin's School of Art, London (1969-73) before taking his Masters Degree in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London (1973-76). Here he was awarded an Abbey Major Scholarship, taking him to The British School at Rome for a year from 1976. His teaching career began as a Lecturer in Painting at Canterbury College of Art (1977-79), after which he was a Tutor in painting at the Royal College of Art, London from 1980 to 1985.

Francesca is a writer and art historian based in Bristol. Since graduating with Distinction from the Warburg Institute in 2015, she has launched into a varied freelance career in the arts. Working at the interface between art and the public has left her adept at transforming complex ideas and academic jargon into something both accessible and (fingers crossed) entertaining.

My course in the Art Institute not only expanded my knowledge in art and art history; but made me fall more in love with art and the history behind all the emotions, ideas, workmanship and influences behind those who created great art.

This course is not designed to be an “iffy” course. It is comprehensive and authentic. It challenged my understanding of art, yet at the same time, enlightened the extremely limited views I had of art.

4worldlovers: Ajay’s was created in 1996 by owner AJ (Andre Jacobs). We teach art classes in Fourways, Kempton, sometimes Cape Town and host retreats in Paternoster as well. I have workshops that you can join and have a love for vegetarian food which I include in many of the events.

Art classes are for adults only. Classes are small (10 max) and the structure is that of one on one and not as a group.

Drawing is fundamental to understanding scaling, proportioning and adding values to your art work, and will not be left out, but if you are able to draw, you can submit your works and I can help you from there.

Learn to draw, to control pressure, observe space and form, understand values, composition and scale, and work with pencil, charcoal, and pastel.

This course will teach you to draw without any help from someone else, tracing or projection.

It will also enhance your insight into art itself through functional projects and applied practice.

It has been designed for the beginner and is adapted for the intermediate learner.

Oils: Learn different surface preparation, blending, under-painting, alla-prima, impasto, mixed media, wet-on-wet, medium based painting, glazing, texture, bleeding techniques, Learn to use colour, composition and process for successful paintings.

Acrylics: You will be trained in all areas of acrylics, the techniques and the relevant materials. Acrylics are harder to blend than oils and can be used as a base coat for oils or as a medium on its own.

Water Colour: Washes, wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry, texture and medium based additions are included. Detailed applications are encouraged together with loosening-up.

Dry and Wet Media: Different media can be used in combination for artwork. It makes the process of art more interesting and varied. Anything can be used to make art, although this course concentrates more on canvas- based work. The range of materials is extensive, using many textured and dimensional media, as well as all conventional media. An example of mixed media would be establishing imagery with soft pastels and pigment, using coffee and oil and then paint to create an artwork.

You need to do your own reseach on terms of resources i.e. what youd like to paint

The course outline includes many materials to incorporate as many techniques as possible and to expose you to all its diverse characteristics. Both carving and modelling are included, also armature construction, composition and all relevant expressions and essentials of sculpture. Other techniques include casting and assemblage. Materials include concrete, plaster, clay, mixed media i.e., wire, paper, polystyrene, wood and stone. You need a very good idea in drawing and proportioning.

This course is a comprehensive drawing learning program and is designed for the serious drawer. The course investigates greater variety into technique and media. You will be expected to work with mixed drawing media and different supports (paper, board and canvas), and to learn to draw both gestural as well as working in fine detail.

Workshops are not compulsory and are open to anyone. Classes range in numbers from 8 to 20 and venues are booked accordingly. They include

Plein Air is the term we use for outdoor painting. It is very unique and enkoyable and done correctly creates beautiful works of landscape art. Annualy I host a winter retreat at Sea Shack, an eco village inside Columbine Reserve, near Paternoster on the WEst Coast of South Africa.

Paternoster Food and Art Retreat is now in its 12th year and offer participants great times, great food and fantastic art excursions in and around Paternoster.

These art events will leave lasting memories of people, art and food for you to return to as so many participants have done.

Team building events can be created for companies or festivals of 20 people or more. They include collective works, personal works, sculpture acrylic pouring and so on. They may include venues, food and drink, all depending on your requirements.

He is awesome at his work. I went to his art retreat at Paternoster and it was so much learning and lot of delicious food and fun. I wanna learn more from him. He is very skilled and excellent at oil painting, acrylics, water colours, stencils and I don’t know what else he knows.
