On Thursday 3 August, SO | The Academy for the Less Good Idea presents one of its signature programmes, HOW | Showing the Making, as a performative keynote offering in the 2023 PSi conference.*

This HOW | Showing the Making features composer, theatre-maker and regular collaborator of The Centre for the Less Good Idea, Sbusiso Shozi.

In this HOW, Shozi speaks to his interest in exploring the origins of African music and its intersections with language and culture across the continent.

Through an active engagement with the audience, Shozi facilitates a ‘learning through doing’, and looks at, among other things, historical imagining and memory as a compositional tool, and how the tonality of language informs music.

In as much as this HOW provides insight into Shozi’s practice – through a mode that blends performative lecture and participative instant composition – it also turns its gaze towards the praxis, approach and ethos of The Centre for the Less Good Idea.

From 17 to 18 August, SO | The Academy for the Less Good Idea hosts a two-day mentorship with percussionists Angelo Moustapha and Tlale Makhene, titled Thinking in Percussion. The mentorship culminates in The Open Moment on the evening of 18 August.

Over these two days, participants of the mentorship will grow their knowledge of rhythm, exploring the transposition of this knowledge onto their own instruments.

The dialogue between the two musical traditions informing Moustapha and Makhene’s practice – West African music and Siswati music – and the investigation of how each of them is not only inspired by these traditions, but how they resist and reinvent them, will provide a hands-on and dynamic educative experience for participating artists.

The Open Moment will be a public showing of the material generated in the two-day mentorship as well as a demonstration of some of the artistic processes and strategies employed by Makhene and Moustapha when making new work. Here, the two will extend their collaborative practice to the audience. They will also be joined by a regular collaborator of The Centre, Micca Manganye, who will lead a body percussion section.

SEPTEMBER | HOW | SHOWING THE MAKING | THE GREAT YES, THE GREAT NO

On Saturday 2 September SO | The Academy for the Less Good Idea presents HOW | Showing the Making: The Great Yes, the Great No as part of the BMW Art Generation conference*.

The Great Yes, the Great No, co-produced by William Kentridge, THE OFFICE performing arts + film, and The Centre for the Less Good Idea, takes its premise from a historical escape from Vichy France by, among others, the surrealist André Breton, the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, the Cuban artist Wilfredo Lam, the communist novelist Victor Serge, and the author Anna Seghers.

In this HOW, Kentridge and members of the cast provide a window into the background, process and thinking behind the making of the production. Using the potential of the boat as a metaphor for power, trade, migration and more, the production will draw on many of the processes and methodologies that have become central to both Kentridge and The Centre’s ways of working.

*HOW | Showing the Making | The Great Yes, The Great No, will be presented to audiences attending the BMW Art Generation conference. An early version of The Great Yes, the Great No will be available to The Centre’s audiences as part of our 10th Season (18 to 22 October).

From Monday 18 September, The Centre hosts the second iteration of Moments of Making, a photographic and documentary film installation showcasing the various processes that have gone into the creation of the last five Seasons of collaborative and interdisciplinary work at The Centre.

Since its inception, The Centre has documented – through film, sound, text and photography – every step of the process of making.
