Welcome to the Johannesburg and Cape Animal Eye Hospitals - Referral veterinary practice dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of animal eye disease. The practice was founded in 1996 by registered veterinary ophthalmologists Drs Goodhead and Venter.
Although dogs, cats and horses comprise the majority of our patients, we have treated a wide variety of other animals including, birds, cheetahs, elephants, lions, rhinos, snakes, and tigers.
Our Gauteng hospital is situated in Fourways, Johannesburg and our Western Cape hospital is in Panorama, Cape Town. In addition to consulting in Johannesburg and Cape Town, we have also performed surgeries in Southern African countries such as Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. In the past, we have made regular consulting trips to the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Hong Kong. We currently still visit Hong Kong on a regular basis.
We are involved in all aspects of veterinary ophthalmology and receive referrals from around Southern Africa for cataract surgery in cats, dogs, horses and wildlife.
Antony was schooled in the Durban area and completed a BSc Agriculture degree at the University of Natal. Following this, he went to Onderstepoort Veterinary Faculty, Pretoria University, where he completed his BVSc degree as well as the Master's degree in ophthalmology. Antony has had the opportunity to live and work in the UK and to regularly attend international veterinary ophthalmology congresses in Europe and the USA. Antony holds his Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
He is married and has two daughters, one is a qualified vet and the other wants to study medicine. He enjoys good quality family time and outdoor activities such as mountain biking, camping, walking and birding.
Antony also volunteers his time for the World Small Animal Veterinary Association by assisting with professional continuing education ophthalmology lecturing in Africa for veterinarians in general practice.
Ludwig is our Practice Manager, he joined our team in 2015. Originally from KZN. He has been managing veterinary practices abroad, in Abu Dhabi since 2008 and thereafter, returned to South Africa in 2015. He has started his own side business, developing temperature monitors for vets since 2019. He enjoys birdwatching, listening to music, woodworking, painting and graphic arts. He loves spending time with his wife and 2 daughters.
Linda is our Nurse at the Johannesburg Animal Eye Hospital. She received her DVN qualification form Onderstepoort in 2004 and joined our practice in 2013, where she has loved being able to work with a variety of animals and caring for our visually impaired patients. In her spare time, Linda enjoys hiking, horse riding or taking her little dog, Mia, to the park.
Christie is born and bred on a Highveld farm. After completing her veterinary degree in 2000, she worked in the UK for a number of years where she acquired an interest and love for ophthalmology. Christie has attended numerous international conferences and courses as part of her travels. By joining the JAEH and at CAEH since 2020, she continues to pursue her passion.
She is married with 2 children and 2 dogs ( 1 blind). She enjoys running and cycling when not running after the kids.
Surina is our Nurse at the Cape Animal Eye Hospital. She is originally from Pretoria, now living in the western cape since 2012. She received her DVN qualification in 2007 and has worked with everything from Birds to lions, but finds ophthalmology the most interesting. She has a cat named Shocky and loves to try out new things.
Bianca is our only full-time receptionist and joined our team in 2017. She has worked in the banking industry for 10 years and enjoys playing the guitar, gaming and spending time with her family and dachshunds named Rockie and Cooper who loves taking long walks, swimming and watching tv with mom.
Cim works as our part-time nurse and receptionist. She qualified as a vet nurse in 1996, and has recently returned to work now that her 2 daughters have left home. Her home is now filled with two hyperactive rescue dogs and a crazy cat.
Lo-An completed her BVSc and has been in general veterinary practice before completing and obtaining her Master's degree in veterinary ophthalmology. Lo-An joined the Johannesburg Animal Eye Hospital in 2008.
She is married, has a little boy, girl and two Miniature Schnauzer fur kids named Bella and Diego. Lo-an currently is assisting JAEH on a locum basis.
